Montane Stormrider Jacket £160

Tested by Ped Baker, tester for The Bike List

I don't mind admitting that I'm a sceptic when it comes to 'breathable' waterproof fabrics, especially when the clothing is intended for sweaty pursuits like cycling. Now I don't consider myself to be a particularly sweaty person, but after an hour or so of brisk riding a fabrics 'breathability' can quickly be overwhelmed, leaving me hot, damp and generally boil-in-the-bag uncomfortable. No such troubles blight the light, (300g Men's size M) Montane Stormrider.

The Stormrider succeeds where others fail for two reasons. On a cold winters day, with both rear zipped vents closed and the Velcro straps on collar and cuff secured, the jackets eVent branded fabric breathes superbly well, even on long, strenuous climbs - when I'm breathing hard the jacket does likewise. Combined with a Rapha merino wool jersey it's my ultimate winter combination, keeping my 30-mile commute warm but fug free from October through to March.

The other reason the Stormrider works so well is that it's not as closely tailored as other jackets, enabling air to circulate around the arms and body. If the jacket does begin to get stuffy, a quick tug releases the Velcro cuff straps and a cool breeze vents up the sleeves and across the back. Fit is roomy rather than baggy and the three-layer eVent fabric is thick enough not to flap excessively at speed. It's also pretty tough too - I've fallen off my bike no less than three times wearing mine, all on tarmac (don't ask!), and I've yet to put a hole in it.

In really heavy rain there's potential for water to ingress through the zips but in three years of use I've yet to suffer any leaks. When the surface of the material is wet the breathability is only marginally impaired. The jacket is machine washable and a wash or re-spray with a waterproofing agent and a steam iron rejuvenates the water repellent coating, helping rain to bead off the surface. Be prepared for a shock after the first wash though, the colour dulls and the surface looks marked but when dry the jacket's colour and finish returns.

One tiny criticism is that the zips sometimes get snagged on the stormflaps and the waist pockets are pointless as items such as keys bang on your thighs when pedalling.

The Stormrider is a discontinued model. The closest match on the Montane website is the Velocity DT but that's constructed from a different Entrant DT fabric. The good news is that has all the sizes and both Fluoro and blue colours in stock with £60 off.
