Revolution floor-to-ceiling bike stand £90

At a glance A stylish two-bike storage system that’s a doddle to assemble. But only works for people who are 6ft or taller and has some other drawbacks.

Storing more than one bike in your garage is a royal pain in the neck. For something that’s seemingly only an inch wide, cycles take up an inordinate amount of room, fall over regularly, and have a tiresome habit of grabbing out at untethered clothing as you walk by.

The ubiquitous wall-mounted, top-tube holding, two-pronged rack largely solves all these issues by keeping sticky-out bars above head height and wheels off the ground. The Revolution floor-to-ceiling bike stand has a similar approach to bike storage, but one that cleverly doesn’t require any drilling into brickwork.

Assembly of the Revolution bike stand is simple. All that’s required is the attaching of four screws with the supplied Allen keys. Installing the stand into position is even easier; undo the over-centre clamp on the aluminium pole, extend the telescopic top section until it reaches the ceiling, snap the clamp shut and turn the lower adjustment wheel until it’s clamped securely between floor and ceiling. If you want a permanent installation, screw holes (but not screws) are provided at both ends.

The two padded hangers are adjustable for both height and angle so the stand can be made to hold frames with any angle of top tube. Raising or lowering the hangers doesn’t require tools as there are hand wheels on the rear, but altering the angle requires the Allen keys again.

The appearance of the Revolution bike stand is top rate. I wouldn’t hesitate having it in my house if space and partner allowed. The columns glossy gold finish and matt black fixings ooze class and are a great way to display as well as store bikes. Fully extended, the stand will reach a height of just over 11ft – if you’ve got the space it would make an impressive piece of industrial furniture.

So is it better than a standard two pronged rack? Yes and no. For one thing it only holds two bikes, even though it’s not recommended I can fit three lightweight racers on my two pronged rack. The other drawback is that you need to be fairly tall to hook the top bike on its hanger, or have a small stool handy – you can’t overlap the bikes. The two pronged rack lifts the handle bars of all the bikes on the stand above head height, saving a lot of space. On the Revolution rack the lowest bikes bars remain at waist height.

On the plus side, the Revolution bike rack displays bikes well, doesn’t require any drilling (although you can screw the stand to floor and ceiling if you wish) and is simplicity itself to put up. Considering the quality of the finish it’s also good value.

Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative says:

Elegant bicycle storage at a best ever price. This bicycle storage stand telescopes in size to fit any room (6 foot 4 inches / 193cm to 11 foot 2 inches / 340cm floor to ceiling) - pit prop style.

  • Constructed in 50mm diameter aluminium tubing, this stand is rigid and reliable like a qood quality Revolution bike frame, yet, weighing only 5kg, this storage stand is easy to manouvre.
  • Very easy to assemble.
  • Simply opening the QR lever allows you to extend the length of the Stand, all the way up to the ceiling.
  • A Foot Plate Ring near the bottom of the stand makes it easy to fine tune the height of the Stand till it's firmly in place from floor to ceiling.
  • Highly adjustable - you can adjust the height, tilt and width of the 2 bike cradles that come supplied to adapt them to different sizes and styles of bike.
  • This stand is built by the same people who make our wildly popular Revolution Tune Up Workstand.
  • The base and the top plate are both drilled to facilitate bolting your Stand into the floor and/or ceiling. (You are not obliged to do this but it is an option if you decide to instal a Revolution Floor to Ceiling Bike Stand as a permanent home fixture and fitting.)
