At a glance Great value and ideal as a back up light or for urban riding but you might want more visibility than this offers for dark country roads and serious night riding 7/10
Winter riding is a joy: nothing beats watching the moon run through its phases, the stars move across the sky week by week and the sense of adventure of being out at night when everyone else is tucked up in front of I'm a Celebrity. But to enjoy that in safety you need to light up like a Christmas tree to make sure that car drivers, racing to get home (to see the aforementioned primetime spectacular) are aware of your presence on the road.
Solid back lights are a vital ingredient and this Night Burst rear light is definitely outstanding value at just under a tenner. It comes with five LEDs, takes two AAA batteries and promises over 150 hours of runtime. Modern LED lights are phenomenally economical and that should be enough to last most riders two or even three winters.
It has four light modes - constant, flashing, slow flash and left to right - and is neatly shaped to fit into a pocket. The bracket is easy to mount and the light sits neatly away from the saddle post. It offers a moderately visible back light. It's not as bright as my Cateye Opticube TL-LD1100, but that comes with ten LEDs! It also doesn't have the side visibility of that rear light, although two of the five LEDs on the Night Burst are angled to the side.
But this is an excellent secondary light which I now use in conjuction with my main Cateye rear light. I ride a 30 mile commute along dark country lanes so I have been known to ride with three back lights in the depths of winter. I'd be reluctant to trust the Night Burst alone, but it is an excellent light that could work well as a back up, secondary light or for more casual riders.
