Vaude Women’s Crims Softshell jacket £95

Tested by Julia Murfin, tester for The Bike List

Yipee! The Tour's coming to Yorkshire! Having the great fortune to live the next dale over from the route, no news has ever made me keener to get on my road bike and ride my local lanes.

As it's winter in the Yorkshire Dales and as I want to pretend to be a lady version of Wiggo, my Vaude Crims Softshell jacket is getting some hammer! And wow, do I love it, and does it stand up to it!

Perfectly suited to windy, blustery, cold weather the Vaude Crims Softshell is everything it promises to be and more. Utterly 100 per cent windproof on core and arms I found it comfortable, warm, breathable, a good fit and stylish. It is robust with a cosy fleecy lining, absolutely what you need on a winter ride. It even turned a few spots of drizzle although I wouldn't chance it in proper rain - it's not a waterproof after all.

I've ridden in this jacket on clear, chilly crisp days and wild, gale-force days and it has kept me comfy without overheating on all occasions.

With a fold-over chin guard, soft lining, lycra at the cuffs and lower hem it is pocket-tastic with storage at the chest and back, plus an MP3 internal hidey hole.

It is well priced too in a competitive market - comparable jackets come in on well known websites around the £85-£110 mark - but the Yorkshirewoman in me thinks that's still a lot of money for a jacket!

Vaude as a company has a conscience with ethical and environmental values. It's a European family concern, dedicated to manufacturing in as green a way as possible, and the Crims jacket meets its stringent bluesign® environmental standard, a value introduced by Vaude to put a measure on its planet-friendly credentials. It is also dedicated to sustainability and fair trade and states a clear goal on its website "to become Europe's most ecological outdoor supplier by 2015".

As the long-standing owner of a Vaude tent, I've been aware of its quality in outdoor equipment for some time. The tent has been well used and has proved tough and reliable. Pleasingly, Vaude's cycling clothing appears to be in a similar vein - hopefully the jacket will last at least as long as the tent has done (10 years and counting). It has already proved it washes and wears well so signs are good!

At a glance

Verdict A winter wonder, this robust, cosy jacket with an eco conscience keeps the wind out and is a perfect partner for rides during the chilly season.
