Owner Reviews
First the mudguards didn't fit and the chain could not be tensioned because the wrong size rear sprocket was fitted. The pedal relectors fell out immediately. The dealer replaced these parts, but the new mudguard would not fit with the new stays, only the original ones, Incidentally the front mudguard is too short so a mud flap is needed if your feet are to avoid a soaking on wet roads.
The headlamp bulb blew when used for the first time, then the dynamo didn't work in the wet and now it doesn't work at all. The rear light goes out if you ride over a bump.
The grub screws vibrated loose from the chaincase, which is now red with rust. The crank arms are discoloured and when I tried to fit the replacement pedals I found that one is corroded on.
The pump position, on the side of the seat tube means it will be flicked off should you be wearing jeans and the pump pegs will snag your trousers, but the pump is next to useless anyway.
Instead of the usual angled rear dropouts Dawes have elected to use track ends, but the position of the mudguard stays means you cannot move the wheel backwards to take up the slack, hence the chain rattles over bumps. The stand and carrier do not centralise owing to the need to use a spacing washer on one side to prevent the rear brake arm being fouling the frame. The Allen bolts for the carrier and rear brake torque arm are soft and rounded immediately they were tightened.
Don't bother with the generic handbook, nothing relevant to this bike in there at all.
To be fair it does give a good ride, with safe, predictable handling, the gears are sweet and the drum brakes, whilst needing a heavy hand have good feel in wet or dry, if only the bike wasn't rotting so obviously before my eyes!
My dealer tells me he is waiting a response from Dawes, when I last wrote to Dawes they eventually ( after two weeks ) refered me back to the dealer.
Given that this bike is made for Dawes in Cambodia and is available elsewhere, badged differently one has to wonder why we are paying such a premium for the Dawes brand?
