Suspension absorbs the bumps on the road/track before they reach your body, keeping the ride comfortable and you in control of the bike.

Pros: Comfy ride compared to no suspension.
Cons: Heavier, more complicated and more expensive.
Front Suspension Forks
Absorbing the bumps also allows the front wheel to
stay in contact with the ground, rather than jumping, which gives
you more control when cornering and braking.
Air springs
Pros: Light and easy to adjust.
Cons: Uneven shock absorption.
Coil springs
Pros: Constant and smooth shock absorption.
Cons: Heavier than air and can only be adjusted by swapping the
spring.
Elastomer springs
Pros: Lighter than coils, but heavier than air.
Cons: Fiddly to adjust, can deteriorate with age and can change
shock absorption characteristics with temperature.
Rear Suspension Shock
![]()
Available in air, coil and various combinations, rear shock technology has evolved as the popularity of full suspension bikes has increased.
All bike suspension is reasonably complex, requiring regular cleaning and servicing. Annual oil changes are advised, although it is best to let a professional do this bit for you.
